JEWELLERY AND WATCH VALUATIONS

WHY DO THEY TAKE SO LONG?

Have You Ever Wondered Why Most Jewellers Quote weeks to Complete Your Insurance Valuation?

After all, surely it’s only a bit of paperwork and looking through that loupe thing?

Right?

Wrong.

A valuation can be hugely time consuming. Here’s a brief overview:

The Jeweller must clean the item, weigh it and then begin his or her assessment. All gemstones are checked, tested and measured. All precious metals are tested and checked for official markings. Your items are examined thoroughly for damage and wear and tear. They are photographed and any formal documentation, such as diamond certificates are checked online and against the diamonds in your jewellery.

Then your documentation is written up. The photographs are edited and added. Your paperwork is checked and bound and added to the Guild of Valuers’ website.

This happens for each and every item.

Now, if a jeweller has the time, it can be done in a few hours. The problem is that for most jewellers, insurance valuations are a bit of a pain, or at the very least they’re not a priority. Most jewellers would prefer to be selling you an item of stock out of their heavily stocked windows. Therefore, spending a few hours on your urgent paperwork is put off for another day, or for when staffing allows.

The other reason you can be quoted weeks to get a jewellery valuation completed, is that many jewellers outsource the job. It’s time-consuming, so they recruit the services of an independent valuer, who might collect the items for valuation every week or two from a selection of different jewellers. Your items are collected, taken away, valued and then returned to the store. This all takes time. It also means your items are at times, not on a secure premises and with someone you have never met.

It’s nothing to worry about. It is just the way it has been done for years.

But, what if there were a different way?

What if you could have it done on the same-day, your items returned and your documentation completed and handed to you?

What if this was charged at no more and in many cases, a lot less than at other jewellers?
